Betta splendens
Also known as: Avatar Betta, Blue-Green Betta, Iridescent Betta
Origin: Southeast Asia
Named for its otherworldly appearance, the avatar betta displays a vivid, shifting combination of turquoise-blue and metallic green iridescence that can appear to change colour depending on the viewing angle and lighting. This effect is produced by the interaction of multiple iridocyte cell layers.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to medium hardness — bright lighting is recommended to showcase the iridescence. Tank: minimum 20L, planted; LED lighting with a blue-white spectrum brings out the colour shift. Feeding: carnivore — betta pellets, bloodworm, brine shrimp; two feedings daily. Behaviour: males aggressive to conspecifics — one per tank. Compatibility: peaceful community tanks; a natural fit with blue-themed aquascapes.
