Auriglobus nefastus
Also known as: Avocado Puffer, Nefastus Puffer
Origin: Southeast Asia (Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia)
Auriglobus nefastus is found in rivers across Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia and is known for its smooth, rounded body with a uniform dull-green dorsal surface — hence the 'Avocado' common name. It inhabits slow-moving and standing waters with abundant vegetation. Despite its sluggish appearance, it is an active predator and confirmed fin-nipper that will attack tankmates many times its own size.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard; good filtration and regular maintenance. Tank: Minimum 120 L; planted setup with open areas; robust driftwood and roots for territory. Feeding: Snails, mussels, cockles, bloodworm, and small crustaceans. Behaviour: Deceptively sluggish but aggressive; attacks tankmates unpredictably — species-only housing. Compatibility: Species-only; individual housing recommended for predictable results.
