Corydoras axelrodi
Origin: Colombia (Meta River)
Corydoras axelrodi, Axelrod's Cory, is a relatively uncommon corydoras from the Meta River drainage in Colombia, named in honour of the legendary aquarium fish expert Dr. Herbert R. Axelrod. The fish has a pale pinkish-cream body with scattered dark spots and a prominent dark blotch positioned near the base of the dorsal fin, creating a pattern that is softer and less dramatically contrasted than many other corydoras species. It requires softer, more acidic water than the broadly adaptable Bronze Cory and benefits most from conditions that mimic its Colombian blackwater origin habitat — slightly tannin-stained, well-oxygenated water with fine sandy substrate. An excellent choice for a soft-water biotope aquarium featuring Colombian or upper Amazon species.
Keep in groups of 6+ on fine sandy substrate. Maintain soft, slightly acidic water — the addition of Indian almond leaves or peat filtration to create light tannin staining is beneficial. Feed sinking catfish tablets, micro worms, and frozen bloodworms. Perform regular water changes. Compatible with other soft-water community species.
