Pundamilia azurea
Also known as: Azure Cichlid, Azurea Victorian
Origin: Lake Victoria, Africa
The Azure Cichlid is a Pundamilia species from the rocky shores of Lake Victoria in which fully dominant males develop a rich, uniform azure-blue colouration over the entire body. It is a maternal mouthbrooder and part of the critically imperilled Victorian cichlid fauna. Aquarium populations are important for the conservation of this species.
Water: 23-26°C, pH 7.5-8.5, moderately hard alkaline water; consistent weekly water changes. Tank: Minimum 150L; rocky shoreline structure with open sandy areas. Feeding: Quality cichlid pellets with spirulina, algae-based flake, and occasional frozen brine shrimp. Behaviour: Males territorial toward rivals; best kept in harem groups with 1 male to 3-4 females. Compatibility: Victorian cichlid biotope; combine with other similarly tempered Victorian haplochromines.
