Pao baileyi
Also known as: Bailey's Puffer
Origin: Chao Phraya and Mekong basins, Thailand and Laos
Pao baileyi occurs in the Chao Phraya and Mekong river systems of Thailand and Laos, where it inhabits fast-flowing rocky sections and slower backwater bays. It grows to approximately 10 cm and features attractive yellow-brown spotting on the dorsal surface. As with all Pao, it is an obligate carnivore requiring hard-shelled prey to maintain beak health.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 6.5–7.5, moderately hard; good oxygenation and flow are appreciated. Tank: Minimum 100 L; rocky decor, driftwood, and open substrate for foraging. Feeding: Snails, mussels, bloodworm, earthworm segments, and frozen crustaceans. Behaviour: Aggressive and territorial; will fight conspecifics — individual housing strongly advised. Compatibility: Species-only; a dedicated species aquarium provides best outcomes.
