Balitoropsis zollingeri
Also known as: Balitoropsis Loach, Java Hillstream Loach, Zollinger's Loach
Origin: Java, Indonesia
Balitoropsis zollingeri is a hillstream loach from fast-flowing streams and rivers in Java, Indonesia. Its torpedo-shaped, flattened body is perfectly adapted for life in high-current environments, with modified paired fins that function as suction pads against smooth rocks and substrate. Colouration is brown-and-cream mottled, providing excellent camouflage among stones.
In the aquarium, B. zollingeri requires well-oxygenated, fast-flowing water with a smooth pebble or river sand substrate. High flow rate, good surface agitation, and cool temperatures are essential. It feeds primarily on biofilm, algae, and periphyton that accumulate on surfaces. Supplementary feeding with algae wafers and blanched vegetables ensures adequate nutrition.
This species is social and active and does best in groups. It is compatible with other hill-stream adapted species such as danios, devarios, and small barbs in a stream biotope setup. It requires stable, pristine water quality.
Water: 20-26°C, pH 6.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard — very high oxygenation and moderate-strong flow essential. Tank: 80 L stream biotope; powerhead or spray bar for flow; smooth pebbles and river sand. Feeding: biofilm (cultivate in tank), algae wafers, blanched spinach, and sinking pellets. Breeding: rarely bred in captivity; requires seasonal cool-water trigger. Compatibility: peaceful with hill-stream community species; avoid fish that prefer still water.
