Mikrogeophagus ramirezi
Also known as: Balloon Blue Ram, Balloon Ram, Belly Ram
Origin: South America (Orinoco basin, Colombia and Venezuela)
The Balloon Blue Ram is a body morph variant of Mikrogeophagus ramirezi in which selective breeding has produced a shortened, highly arched spinal column that results in the fish's characteristic rounded, balloon-like body shape. The colouration is essentially identical to that of the standard German Blue Ram, with the full complement of yellow, blue, and black markings — but compressed into the distinctive rotund body form that gives the variety its name.
As a human-developed morph, the Balloon Blue Ram has no counterpart in nature. However, its water chemistry, dietary, and social requirements are unchanged from those of the standard German Blue Ram. The abbreviated body shape does place some increased physiological demands on the fish's internal organs, and Balloon Rams are generally considered slightly more delicate than their standard-bodied counterparts. They are less agile and may struggle to compete for food with faster-moving tank mates.
In the aquarium, Balloon Blue Rams are peaceful, slow-moving fish that move deliberately through the lower and middle levels of the tank. Their unusual body shape makes them a talking point in any aquarium, and they retain all the personality, colour, and breeding behaviour characteristic of the species. Experienced intermediate aquarists who enjoy dwarf cichlids will find them a charming and distinctive addition.
Tank Setup
Minimum 70 litres. Fine sand substrate and gentle décor with caves, driftwood, and plants are ideal. Due to their reduced swimming ability, avoid strong currents. Low to moderate lighting. Ensure food is placed where the fish can easily access it, as their swimming efficiency is reduced compared to standard-bodied fish.
Water Parameters
Temperature 26–30 °C, pH 5.5–7.5, GH 1–10, KH 0–5. Warm, soft, clean water is essential. Perform 20–30% water changes weekly. Keep nitrates below 20 ppm. Poor water quality affects Balloon Rams more quickly than standard-bodied fish.
Feeding
Offer sinking micro pellets and granules, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Avoid large foods that are difficult to swallow. Feed small amounts two to three times daily and monitor to ensure the fish are eating adequately.
Tank Mates
Choose only small, peaceful, slow-moving companions — fast-moving fish will outcompete Balloon Rams for food. Small tetras, corydoras, otocinclus, and dwarf rasboras are good choices. Avoid nippy or aggressive species.
Behaviour
Balloon Blue Rams are calm and deliberate in movement. They display the characteristic cichlid personality — curious, territorial during breeding — but their reduced mobility should be considered when designing the tank. Pairs bond and breed successfully.
Health
More susceptible to internal organ stress due to the compressed body cavity. Maintain optimal water quality at all times. Hexamita, ich, and bacterial infections are the primary concerns. Quarantine new fish for at least three weeks before introduction.
