Poecilia sphenops var.
Also known as: Balloon Dalmatian Molly, Dalmatian Balloon Molly
Origin: Captive bred
The Balloon Dalmatian Molly combines the distinctive balloon body mutation with the eye-catching Dalmatian pattern — random black spots on a white background — for a fish that is as visually entertaining as it is charming in behaviour. No two individuals have identical spotting, making each fish unique.
The Dalmatian pattern is produced by melanophore aggregation genes and is independently variable from the base body colour, so the density and distribution of spots varies naturally. In a group of Balloon Dalmatian Mollies, this variation creates an attractive, diverse display.
A healthy, long-lived molly variant when kept in appropriate hard, alkaline conditions with good diet and water quality.
Water: 24–28 °C, pH 7.5–8.5, GH 15–25; salt addition (1 tsp/10 L) beneficial. Tank: 80 L minimum; gentle flow; plants provide security. Feeding: Varied flake, spirulina wafers, blanched vegetables; 2–3 meals daily. Breeding: Livebearer; 20–60 fry; Dalmatian pattern variable in offspring. Compatibility: Peaceful; ideal mixed-livebearer community fish.
