Poecilia sphenops
Origin: Captive bred
The Gold Balloon Molly combines the rounded, pot-bellied balloon body mutation with a warm golden-yellow colouration that brings brightness and warmth to community aquarium settings. A reliable and characterful livebearer, the Gold Balloon Molly is active throughout the day, frequently browsing algae from surfaces and glass, socialising with conspecifics, and investigating every corner of the tank. Like all mollies, it benefits from hard, alkaline water conditions and tolerates mild salinity, making it compatible with brackish setups. It is one of the most beginner-friendly fish available — hardy, visually appealing, and naturally reproducing in captivity. The balloon body form is best kept with gentle, non-aggressive tankmates that will not exploit the reduced mobility associated with the shortened spine.
Maintain in alkaline, moderately hard water (pH 7.5–8.5). Keep more females than males. Feed varied diet including flakes, spirulina-based foods for algae grazing, and occasional frozen or live foods. Regular water changes. Small amounts of aquarium salt (1–2g per litre) can be beneficial for mollies but is optional. Fry are born live — provide dense plants or breeding traps to prevent predation if raising young.
