Poecilia sphenops var.
Also known as: Balloon White Molly, White Balloon Molly
Origin: Captive bred
The Balloon White Molly shares the distinctive rounded balloon body with its black counterpart, but presents an immaculate pearl-white colouration that reflects light beautifully in a planted aquarium. The plump, rounded body gives the fish a distinctive waddling swimming motion that many hobbyists find endearing.
White mollies in the balloon form are popular in community tanks where their brightness contrasts nicely with darker fish and plants. They are peaceful, robust, and relatively easy to breed, producing a mix of standard and balloon-bodied offspring.
Maintain in hard, alkaline water — optionally with a small salt addition — and feed a diet that includes plenty of vegetable matter to maintain health and vibrancy.
Water: 24–28 °C, pH 7.5–8.5, GH 15–25; mild salt addition optional but beneficial. Tank: 80 L minimum; gentle flow; plants appreciated. Feeding: Flake with spirulina, blanched zucchini or lettuce, frozen Artemia; 2–3 meals daily. Breeding: Livebearer; 20–60 fry per brood; mix of balloon and standard bodies in offspring. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent with other mollies, platies, swordtails.
