Betta fasciata
Origin: Sumatra (Indonesia), southern Thailand
Betta fasciata, the Banded Betta, is a large and robust wild betta species found in the slow-flowing blackwater streams and peat swamps of Sumatra (Indonesia) and southern Thailand. Its common name derives from the distinct dark vertical banding visible on both males and females, with males additionally displaying iridescent blue-green scale centres that create a rich, complex pattern. At up to 11cm, it is significantly larger than the common Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens) and has a correspondingly less aggressive temperament relative to its size, though males remain combative toward each other and should not be housed together. Unlike the more compact Betta splendens, this species is a less enthusiastic biter and can often be maintained with other robust, appropriately sized fish in a large, well-structured aquarium.
House in a soft, slightly acidic to neutral aquarium of at least 100 litres with floating plants, driftwood, and leaf litter for surface cover. The tank must be tightly covered as betta fish are expert escape artists. Keep singly or as a male-female pair with adequate space and visual barriers. Feed varied live and frozen carnivore foods: bloodworms, daphnia, artemia, and insect larvae.
