Betta taeniata
Origin: Borneo (Sarawak, Kalimantan)
Betta taeniata is a mouthbrooding wild betta species from the blackwater streams and peat swamps of Borneo (Sarawak and Kalimantan), found in extremely soft, acidic water with pH values commonly below 5.0 in its natural habitat. It displays attractive brown banding over a pale base body with iridescent blue-green scale centres that create a subtly beautiful appearance. Unlike most bettas that are bubble nesters, Betta taeniata is a paternal mouthbrooder — the male incubates eggs and fry in his buccal cavity until they are released as free-swimming juveniles. Males of this species are considered relatively peaceful by wild betta standards and may occasionally be maintained together in very large, heavily structured aquariums, but this remains risky and individual variation is significant. A species for dedicated wild betta enthusiasts.
Maintain in extremely soft, highly acidic water (pH 4.0–6.5, near-zero hardness). Use RO water with peat filtration and Indian almond leaves. Provide a well-planted aquarium with abundant driftwood, leaf litter, and hiding spaces. Keep as a pair or singly. Feed live and frozen small invertebrates. Extremely sensitive to water chemistry deviations — do not house with hard-water fish.
