Gymnotus carapo
Also known as: Banded Knifefish, Banded Electric Knifefish, Carapo Knifefish
Origin: South America
Gymnotus carapo is one of the most widespread gymnotiform species, distributed across Central and South America from Guatemala to Argentina. Its body is banded with dark and pale oblique bars that are unique to each individual. Unlike some knifefish it tolerates somewhat harder, more neutral water conditions. It is a pulse-type electric fish that uses low-frequency discharges for orientation. It can be aggressive toward conspecifics, particularly when food is involved. Juveniles are easier to manage in groups; adults typically require individual housing. Accepts a broader diet than many knifefish species.
Water: 22-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard; well-filtered, oxygenated water. Tank: Minimum 200L; fine sand substrate; PVC tubes for hiding; subdued or off-timed lighting. Feeding: Carnivore; earthworms, bloodworms, brine shrimp, chopped shellfish; accepts frozen foods readily. Breeding: Egg-layer; lays in submerged vegetation; rarely bred in captivity. Compatibility: Can be mildly aggressive; keep singly as adults or with dissimilar robust fish.
