Origin: South America (widespread Amazon basin)
Leporinus fasciatus, the Banded Leporinus, is a robust and visually striking large characin found widely throughout the Amazon basin. Its bold alternating black and yellow horizontal bands intensify with age and size. An active, somewhat boisterous fish, it can be nippy towards slower tank mates and will consume soft-leaved plants. Best suited to large, mature community aquariums with sturdy decor and robust tank mates.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 5.5–7.5, tolerates moderate hardness. Tank: 200 L minimum; robust decor; avoid delicate plants; provide hiding spots and open swimming lanes. Feeding: Omnivorous; accepts pellets, vegetables, fruit, and meaty frozen foods. Behaviour: Active and somewhat boisterous; can be nippy; best kept singly or in large groups. Compatibility: Keep with large robust fish such as medium cichlids, large barbs and large catfish.
