Astronotus crassipinnis
Also known as: Banded Oscar, Crassipinnis Oscar
Origin: South America
Astronotus crassipinnis hails from the cooler subtropical drainages of the Paraguay and Paraná river systems. It is distinguished from the common Oscar by more clearly defined vertical banding and a somewhat stockier body. Tolerates slightly lower temperatures and is an interesting alternative for keepers who appreciate species-level accuracy.
Water: 22-28°C, pH 6.5-7.5, moderately hard water tolerated. Tank: Minimum 350L, strong filtration, minimal décor or robust hard-leaved plants only. Feeding: Large cichlid pellets, prawns, earthworms, quality frozen foods. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive; territorial with conspecifics but manageable in large tanks. Compatibility: Best with other large robust South American cichlids.
