Origin: Australia (Northern Territory, Queensland)
Melanotaenia trifasciata is found across a wide range of river systems in Australia's Northern Territory and Queensland, with different populations displaying markedly different colour forms. Males can be spectacularly coloured with bright reds, blues, and oranges. A hardy and active species that thrives in most community setups with adequate swimming space.
Water: 24–30°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard water. Tank: 150 L+, open swimming areas with some plants or driftwood for structure. Feeding: Omnivore; quality flakes, pellets, and frozen/live supplement foods. Behaviour: Active, boisterous, peaceful schooling fish; males spar but cause no damage. Compatibility: Good community fish; best with other medium-sized peaceful species.
