Metynnis fasciatus
Also known as: Banded Silver Dollar, Tiger Silver Dollar
Origin: Amazon basin, Brazil
Metynnis fasciatus is the standout of the silver dollar group, bearing three to five bold dark vertical bands across a gleaming silver body. This pattern is visible at distance and creates a mesmerising visual effect in a school. It originates from the central and western Amazon basin in Brazil.
Care follows standard Metynnis husbandry: herbivorous diet, large groups, and avoidance of soft plants. The banding pattern is most vivid in juveniles and may fade slightly as fish age, though well-conditioned adults maintain impressive markings. It is considered one of the most desirable Metynnis for display purposes.
Not subject to piranha restrictions in most regions.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft to moderately soft; Amazon origin means slightly acidic conditions produce superior banding intensity. Tank: Minimum 200L for 6+ fish; tall format; open swimming space with robust Anubias or Java Fern décor. Feeding: Herbivore; spirulina flake and pellets, blanched greens, cucumber; varied diet maintains band intensity. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; bands most vivid during breeding condition; not commonly bred in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful; one of the most impressive schooling serrasalmids for large display tanks.
