About

Corydoras metae, the Bandit Corydoras, is a charming and popular small catfish native to the Meta River drainage in Colombia, South America. Its most distinctive feature is the bold black band that runs through the eye from the tip of the snout, creating the appearance of a bandit mask — hence its common name. A second black marking covers the dorsal fin and extends partway down the body, contrasting with the pale white-silver base colour.

Like all Corydoras, the Bandit Cory is a peaceful, social, armoured catfish that spends its time foraging along the substrate. It possesses bony plates (scutes) instead of scales for protection, and three pairs of sensitive barbels around the mouth for detecting food in soft substrate. The intestinal respiratory adaptation shared by all Corydoras — periodically gulping air at the surface — helps them survive in warm, potentially low-oxygen environments.

Corydoras metae grows to approximately 5 cm, making it a medium-small corydoras, ideally suited to community aquariums of 60 litres and above. Groups of six or more engage in the most natural behaviour — constant social foraging, group dashing to the surface, and resting together in tight clusters.

This species appreciates fine sand substrate. On coarse gravel or sharp substrate, the delicate barbels erode and become susceptible to bacterial infection, leading to 'barbel rot' — one of the most common health issues in corydoras kept on inappropriate substrate.

Care Guide

Tank Setup: A 60-litre tank minimum for a group of six. Use fine sand (play sand, pool filter sand, or specialist aquarium sand) as substrate — this protects the barbels. Provide hiding spots under driftwood, flat rocks, and broad-leaved plants like Anubias. Regular gentle siphoning of the substrate prevents waste accumulation.

Water Parameters: Temperature 22–26°C; pH 6.0–7.5; GH 2–12 °dH; KH 2–8 °dH. Prefers cooler, softer water than many tropical species. Avoid sustained temperatures above 27°C.

Feeding: Omnivore bottom forager. Provide sinking pellets, corydoras wafers, frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, Tubifex, and brine shrimp. Feed in the evening when they are most active. Ensure food reaches the substrate — hungry tank mates may consume food before it sinks.

Tank Mates: Exceptionally compatible with peaceful community species. Ideal with small to medium tetras, rasboras, small danios, livebearers, gouramis, and other peaceful bottom-dwellers. Avoid aggressive cichlids.

Behaviour: Peaceful, social, and entertaining. Groups forage together constantly, engaging in coordinated swimming patterns. Surface dashes to gulp air are normal — not a sign of respiratory distress if oxygenation is adequate.

Health: Hardy and long-lived (up to 10+ years). Main risks are barbel erosion from sharp substrate and bacterial infections from poor water quality. Pristine water and appropriate substrate prevent most issues.
