Tetraodon barbatus
Also known as: Barbate Puffer, Bearded Puffer, African River Puffer
Origin: West-Central Africa
Tetraodon barbatus is among the least commonly imported of the African freshwater puffers, collected only sporadically from West-Central African river drainages. The defining feature giving it its name consists of small dermal projections around the snout area that resemble a short beard. Like its congeners it is an obligate carnivore with a powerful beak well suited to crushing hard-shelled prey. The aquarium should replicate a clean-water African river biotope with a sandy bottom, scattered smooth rocks, and robust water movement from a high-capacity canister or sump filter. It is highly territorial and intolerant of other puffers or similar-bodied fishes. Water quality lapses are quickly reflected in fin clamping and refusal to feed.
Water: pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 24–27°C, moderate hardness; strong oxygenation essential; weekly water changes of 30–40%. Tank: 150 L minimum; smooth rock arrangement, fine sand; no sharp decor; powerful filtration. Feeding: Snails, clams, mussels, crayfish tails, earthworms; rotate weekly; hard-shelled items mandatory. Breeding: No documented captive spawning records exist for this species. Compatibility: Solitary only; extreme aggression toward all tankmates; single-specimen tank mandatory.
