Apistogramma barlowi
Also known as: Barlow's Apisto, Barlowi Apistogramma
Origin: South America
Apistogramma barlowi was formally described from Peruvian Amazonia and is named for its discoverer. Males develop pronounced lyre-tail extensions and a vivid facial blotch that becomes especially bright during courtship. This species adapts reasonably well to aquarium conditions given appropriate water quality.
Water: 24-29°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft to moderately soft (GH 2-8). Tank: 60L minimum, sand substrate, caves (coconut shells or ceramic), live plants. Feeding: omnivore — live/frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, Artemia; quality cichlid micro-pellets. Behaviour: territorial during breeding; pairs or harems (1M:2-3F) both work. Compatibility: peaceful community; suitable with small tetras, pencilfish, and Corydoras.
