Polypterus delhezi
Also known as: Barred Bichir, Armoured Bichir
Origin: Africa
Polypterus delhezi originates from the middle and upper Congo River basin in Central Africa. Its bold barred pattern distinguishes it clearly from other polypterids and intensifies with age. Like all bichirs it is an obligate air breather that will drown without surface access.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard water. Tank: Minimum 250L, fine substrate, caves and driftwood, a very secure lid to prevent escapes. Feeding: Carnivore; live or frozen worms, prawns, mussel, and sinking carnivore pellets. Behaviour: Generally peaceful with fish it cannot swallow; mild fin-nipping tendency. Compatibility: Keep with large, robust African or community fish; avoid anything bite-sized.
