Hemigrammus marginatus
Origin: Paraguay, Paraná, and São Francisco River basins, Brazil
The Bassam Tetra is a medium-small, undemanding tetra from the Paraguay, Paraná, and São Francisco river basins in Brazil. Its silver body is accented by a subtle golden midlateral stripe and dark fin margins in dominant males. Tolerant of a wide temperature and water chemistry range, it is one of the most beginner-friendly tetras available. Active and social, it mixes well with most peaceful community fish when kept in schools.
Easy to care for in soft to moderately hard water. Keep in schools of 8 or more for best behaviour. Feed flake, micro-pellets, small frozen foods. Provide open swimming space with some planted areas for refuge. Tolerates temperature from 18–28°C, making it suitable for unheated tropical tanks.
