Microsynodontis batesii
Also known as: Bates' Microsynodontis, Pygmy African Catfish
Origin: West Africa (Cameroon, Nigeria)
Microsynodontis batesii is a diminutive mochokid from the forest streams of Cameroon and Nigeria, one of only a handful of truly nano-sized catfish within the family. It closely resembles a miniature Synodontis in body plan, complete with the characteristic three-paired barbels and mochokid finnage, but reaches only about 5 cm at full adult size.
In the aquarium it thrives in soft, slightly acidic conditions replicating its native West African forest stream habitat, with leaf litter, fine-branched wood and low to moderate flow. It is a peaceful species that poses no threat to even the smallest nano fish or invertebrates.
Groups of four or more are recommended; solitary individuals are shy and may refuse food, while groups display natural social behaviour and feed more confidently.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.0–7.0, soft (GH 1–10, KH 1–6); peat-filtered or blackwater conditions ideal. Tank: 40 L minimum; leaf litter, fine driftwood, Java moss; low to moderate flow; subdued lighting. Feeding: Micro sinking pellets, frozen daphnia, baby brine shrimp, microworms; small particle size essential. Breeding: Not documented in captivity; cave or crevice spawner presumed. Compatibility: Peaceful with nano tetras, small rasboras and dwarf shrimp; avoid any fish large enough to threaten it.
