Otocinclus batmani
Also known as: Batman Otocinclus, Batman Oto
Origin: South America (Colombia)
Otocinclus batmani was described in 2006 from specimens collected in Colombia, and it immediately gained cult status in the aquarium hobby thanks to the distinctive dark blotch on its dorsal surface that strikingly resembles the Batman logo. Beyond its novelty markings, it is a small, slender Otocinclus with a brown-grey base colour, faint lateral banding, and the same functional morphology as its congeners — adapted for grazing periphyton from submerged surfaces.
In Colombia, O. batmani is found in clear, soft, slightly acidic streams in the lowland Amazon foothills. Like all otocinclus, it schools in groups over algae-rich shallow substrate, feeding continuously throughout daylight hours. Its natural habitat is characterised by moderate current, sand and fine gravel substrate, and abundant aquatic and riparian vegetation. Water conditions in its native range are warm and soft — conditions that must be replicated in captivity.
Despite its celebrity, O. batmani has the same care requirements as other Otocinclus and is not particularly more difficult to maintain. Its rarity and distinctive appearance rather than any unusual husbandry demands command its premium price. Hobbyists who manage the acclimatisation period successfully will find it a charming and effective algae eater that generates considerable conversation.
Water: Soft, slightly acidic to neutral water at pH 6.0–7.5 and 21–26°C; very high water quality required during and after acclimatisation. Tank: 40 litres minimum with live plants and established algae biofilm; provide smooth driftwood and stones for grazing. Feeding: Biofilm is the primary food; supplement with blanched courgette, cucumber, and algae wafers placed directly on surfaces. Breeding: Not yet documented in captivity; would likely require soft, slightly acidic water and excellent nutrition. Compatibility: Fully peaceful with all community fish, shrimp, and snails; a superb addition to any South American nano biotope.
