Scleromystax barbatus
Also known as: Bearded Cory, Banded Cory
Origin: South America
Scleromystax barbatus is one of the largest and most sexually dimorphic armoured catfish available, with mature males developing dramatic bristle-like odontodes on their snout and gill covers. It originates from cooler Atlantic coastal streams in southern Brazil and prefers lower temperatures than most tropical cories. It requires a spacious tank and higher water quality.
Water: 18–24°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to medium hardness; cooler water than tropical cories. Tank: 120L+, fine sand substrate, robust plants, moderate to strong flow. Feeding: Sinking wafers, frozen bloodworm, tubifex, earthworm, and quality sinking pellets. Behaviour: Peaceful schooling species but males can be competitive; groups of 4–6 (more females). Compatibility: Best with other cool-water species; robust plants only due to active substrate sifting.
