Scleromystax barbatus
Origin: Brazil (coastal Atlantic drainages, southeastern Brazil)
Scleromystax barbatus, the Bearded Cory, is a large and robust armored catfish from the coastal Atlantic drainages of southeastern Brazil. Adult males develop impressive bristle-like facial odontodes during breeding condition, giving the species its common name. Unlike most corydoras, it prefers cooler, well-oxygenated water, making it ideal for subtropical setups. It is moderately social but less obligate a schooling fish than other cories.
Requires cooler water (18–24°C) than most tropical corydoras — do not house with warm-water species. Provide fine sand substrate, good oxygenation, and strong current. Feed sinking meaty foods: frozen bloodworms, white worms, sinking wafers. Best kept in groups of 4+. Tank should be at least 120L with driftwood and hiding spots.
