Cyclocheilichthys apogon
Also known as: Beardless Barb, Barbel-less Barb
Origin: Southeast Asia
Cyclocheilichthys apogon is a widespread and modestly attractive cyprinid found across river systems of Southeast Asia. Its common name derives from its unusually barbel-free mouth, a departure from the typical barb plan. It grows to a reasonable size and is an active schooling species, best displayed in a spacious, well-filtered tank with other medium-bodied riverine fish. Juveniles may be more colourful than adults.
Water: 22–28 °C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 4–15). Tank: 200 L minimum; open water with good flow and planted margins. Feeding: Omnivore — pellets, flakes, live or frozen invertebrates. Behaviour: Peaceful active schooler; keep 6+ for natural group dynamics. Compatibility: Good with medium to large peaceful community fish.
