About

Syncrossus beauforti, the Beaufort's Loach, is one of the most visually spectacular loaches available in the hobby. Endemic to large river systems across Thailand, Cambodia, and Malaysia, it can reach 30 cm in the wild and demands correspondingly large aquaria. Juveniles display bold orange-and-black vertical bands; adults shift toward a more muted but still impressive patterning. This species has been observed in both slow- and fast-moving water depending on season.

In captivity, Beaufort's Loach is an assertive species that establishes a clear dominance hierarchy within its group. Kept in groups of four or more, aggression is distributed and each fish can find refuge. The tank must be large — ideally 300 L or more — with a mixture of open sandy areas and dense cave structures. Strong filtration and regular partial water changes are mandatory to maintain the water quality this species requires.

Diet should be varied and protein-rich: sinking carnivore pellets, frozen bloodworm, mysis shrimp, and chopped earthworm are all accepted eagerly. Syncrossus beauforti is long-lived and can become a true centrepiece specimen if well maintained.

Care Guide

Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 24–29°C, well-oxygenated with moderate to strong flow. Tank: 300 L minimum; thick sand substrate, large caves, driftwood tangles; dim lighting preferred. Feeding: Protein-rich sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, mysis, chopped earthworm, and occasional vegetable wafers. Breeding: No confirmed captive breeding; presumed seasonal migratory spawner. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; keep with large, robust species; avoid small or timid tankmates.
