Nannostomus beckfordi
Also known as: Beckford's Pencilfish, Golden Pencilfish, Red-striped Pencilfish
Origin: Guyana, Suriname, Trinidad
Nannostomus beckfordi, Beckford's Pencilfish, originates from Guyana, Suriname, and Trinidad and is the most widely available and adaptable pencilfish in the hobby. It tolerates a broader range of water parameters than most relatives without sacrificing the elegant body form and charming behaviour typical of all pencilfish. An ideal starting point for aquarists new to the Nannostomus genus.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 5.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard; most adaptable pencilfish species. Tank: 60 L minimum; planted tank with gentle flow; floating plants and dark substrate recommended. Feeding: Accepts flake and micro-pellets readily; enrich with frozen brine shrimp and daphnia. Behaviour: Peaceful schooling species; keep 8+; mild male rivalry during breeding. Compatibility: Excellent community fish with other small tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and shrimp.
