Cyprinus rubrofuscus
Also known as: Bekko Koi, Tortoiseshell Koi, Nishikigoi
Origin: Japan
Bekko koi are defined by a single base color — white (Shiro Bekko), red (Aka Bekko), or yellow (Ki Bekko) — overlaid with tortoiseshell-pattern black (sumi) markings. The Shiro Bekko is the most common and resembles a Kohaku with black spots added. Good Bekko specimens have well-balanced sumi that does not reach the head.
Water: 5–25°C, pH 6.8–7.8, good filtration to maintain base color brightness. Pond: minimum 1,000 L; the sumi on Bekko tends to be stable and well-defined with age. Feeding: quality koi pellets; color-enhancing foods can improve white or red base clarity. Behaviour: active and social; a good community fish in a diverse koi pond. Compatibility: all koi varieties; no specific considerations.
