Devario devario
Also known as: Bengal Danio, Sind Danio
Origin: South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh)
The Bengal Danio is a sizable and lively member of the Devario genus, found across a broad swathe of South Asia including the rivers and streams of northern India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. It grows to approximately 12 cm, making it one of the larger danios available to hobbyists. Its body is streamlined and compressed, displaying a blue to silver background with a series of golden to yellow horizontal stripes, and fins that may show yellowish coloration in dominant males. Like all danios, the Bengal Danio is an inveterate surface and mid-water swimmer, perpetually in motion and most at ease in a large school. It is wholly peaceful and poses no threat to other fish, making it a great candidate for community aquaria with other medium to larger peaceful species. Originating from rivers and lakes that can vary significantly in temperature through the seasons, it is notably tolerant of cooler water, with a lower temperature threshold of 15°C making it suitable for unheated aquaria in moderate climates. The Bengal Danio is an omnivore that readily accepts all standard aquarium foods. Its combination of hardiness, size, peace, and adaptability makes it a worthwhile but somewhat underappreciated species in the hobby.
Tank Setup A minimum of 100 liters is appropriate for a school of six or more. This is an active species that swims throughout the water column and needs substantial horizontal swimming space. Use fine sand or gravel substrate, add some driftwood and robust plants along the sides and back, and keep the center open. A tightly fitted lid is recommended as danios are skilled jumpers.
Water Parameters Maintain pH between 6.0 and 7.5 and general hardness of 5–20 dGH. Carbonate hardness of 2–10 dKH is suitable. Temperature range is wide: 15–25°C, allowing use in unheated tanks in temperate climates. This species tolerates variation well but benefits from consistent, clean water. Perform weekly water changes of 20–25%.
Feeding An undemanding omnivore. Offer quality flake or small pellet foods as a staple. Supplement regularly with live or frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. Feed two to three times daily in modest portions. Being an active fish with a high metabolism, it benefits from regular feeding.
Tankmates Excellent community fish. Compatible with a wide range of peaceful medium-sized species including barbs, other danios, larger tetras, gouramis, rainbowfish, and bottom dwellers like corydoras and loaches. Avoid pairing with very small nano fish that may be intimidated or outcompeted.
Health and Maintenance Hardy and disease-resistant. The main considerations are maintaining water cleanliness and a secure lid to prevent jumping. Monitor for ich, which can affect danios kept in suboptimal conditions.
