About

Botia dario, commonly known as the Queen Loach or Bengal Loach, is a medium-sized botiid loach native to the Brahmaputra river system and surrounding drainages in India and Bangladesh. It displays a bold pattern of alternating dark brown to black and pale cream to orange-yellow vertical bars across the entire body, giving it a vivid striped appearance. The coloration is particularly bright in well-maintained, socially housed specimens.

Reaching up to 12 cm, it is a robustly built loach that inhabits fast to moderately flowing rivers and streams with sandy, rocky, or mixed substrates. Like all Botia species, it is equipped with a sharp suborbital spine beneath each eye that can be used defensively — a feature to be mindful of when handling or netting the fish.

In the aquarium, the Bengal Loach is active, bold, and entertaining. It is a confirmed snail predator and will systematically reduce pest snail populations. Keeping it in a group of at least five is essential — solo specimens become stressed and may become aggressive toward other species. Within a proper social group, the Bengal Loach is a lively and enjoyable community fish for tanks with medium to larger peaceful companions. Bengal Loaches from different river systems may display subtle pattern variations — some populations showing more orange or yellowish tones in the pale bars, others appearing with cooler cream tones. This natural variability within the species is appreciated by collectors who enjoy maintaining multiple specimens and comparing individual markings.

Care Guide

Tank Setup A minimum 120-liter tank with fine sand substrate is required. Provide driftwood, smooth rocks, and caves for shelter and territory. Moderate to strong water flow is preferred. Plants can be included but may be disturbed by digging — use potted or attached varieties. A tight lid is important.

Water Parameters Maintain pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 20–26°C. Soft to moderately hard water. Perform 25–30% weekly water changes. Good oxygenation and filtration are important for this active species.

Feeding Omnivorous. Offer sinking catfish pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Eagerly hunts and consumes aquatic snails — introduce ramshorn or Malaysian trumpet snails as live food supplements. Not safe with ornamental snails or shrimp.

Social Grouping Keep in groups of at least 5. The group establishes social hierarchies through audible clicking and chasing. Larger groups of 6–8 are more harmonious. Never keep singly.

Snail Eradication Highly effective against pest snail infestations. Will methodically hunt snails throughout the tank, including within substrate.

Handling Use caution when netting — the suborbital spine can entangle in mesh. Use a smooth-sided container for transfers.

Health Notes Prone to ich when newly introduced. Quarantine 2–4 weeks. Maintain clean substrate, as barbels may erode in poor conditions. Stable water parameters and a well-fed group prevent most health issues.

Long-term Notes Bengal Loaches are robust and can live 8+ years in appropriate conditions. Their coloration tends to intensify with age in well-maintained tanks, making older specimens particularly attractive. Regular maintenance, a varied diet, and stable group size ensure continued health. This is a rewarding long-term loach for keepers who commit to the group dynamic it requires. Introduce all loaches simultaneously to prevent established individuals from excluding newcomers. Bengal Loaches that have settled in a tank for more than a week before new group members are added may attack the additions.
