Benitochromis finleyi
Also known as: Finley's Benitochromis, Blue-fin Mouthbrooder
Origin: Cameroon
Benitochromis finleyi is a beautifully coloured Cameroonian cichlid combining amber-to-gold body colouration with vivid deep-blue iridescence in the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins. It is one of the most attractive Benitochromis species and is reasonably available through specialist West African cichlid importers. The biparental mouthbrooding system — in which male and female take turns incubating the larvae — is fascinating to observe.
Pairs form strong bonds and display elaborate courtship involving fin displays and substrate circling. Outside of active breeding, B. finleyi is a well-mannered community cichlid that coexists with suitably sized companions without excessive aggression.
Soft to moderately hard water (pH 5.5–7.0) and a 120 L tank with bogwood, flat rocks, and plant cover create ideal conditions. Condition the pair on live or frozen earthworms and bloodworm to stimulate spawning.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft to moderately hard (GH 2–12, KH 1–6). Tank: 120 L; bogwood, flat rocks for spawning initiation, and plant cover for seclusion. Feeding: Cichlid pellets, earthworms, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp — varied meaty conditioning diet. Breeding: Biparental mouthbrooder; elaborate courtship display precedes spawning — both parents share holding. Compatibility: Good community cichlid; pairs well with robust West African tetras and peaceful catfish.
