Hyphessobrycon bentosi
Also known as: Bentosi Tetra, Ornate Tetra, Bentos Tetra
Origin: Amazon basin (widespread)
Hyphessobrycon bentosi, the Ornate or Bentosi Tetra, is a beautiful mid-size tetra from the Amazon basin. Its most striking feature is the large, black-tipped dorsal fin with a prominent white central spot — a feature that males extend and display dramatically during courtship and rival confrontations. The body is a translucent rosy-pink that deepens in well-conditioned fish. Females are plumper with a less pronounced dorsal fin. A peaceful, visually impressive species that adapts well to soft, slightly acidic planted aquariums. Its fin display behaviors make it a particularly engaging fish to observe in a species or community setup.
Water: pH 5.5–7.5, temperature 23–28 °C; soft to moderately soft. Slightly acidic water preferred. Tank: 60 L minimum; planted aquarium with subdued lighting and dark substrate to enhance pink coloration. Feeding: Omnivore; quality flake, micro-pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and brine shrimp. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; condition males and females separately with live foods before pairing. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent with other small to medium South American community fish.
