Syncrossus berdmorei
Also known as: Berdmore's Loach, Burmese Tiger Loach
Origin: Myanmar, Thailand
Syncrossus berdmorei is a sizeable loach native to rivers of Myanmar and adjacent Thailand, where it inhabits turbid to clear waters with sandy or gravelly bottoms. Reaching up to 25 cm, it is unmistakable thanks to the series of dark, irregular vertical bars that wrap its cream to yellowish body. Like other large botiids, Berdmore's Loach is an opportunistic feeder and can become a dominant presence in a mixed community if not carefully paired with appropriate tankmates.
This species is best maintained in a group of four to six in a spacious aquarium with robust hiding structures. It appreciates a moderate current simulating its riverine home, and tends to be more active during the day than many other loaches. Its hardiness makes it forgiving of minor water parameter fluctuations, though excellent filtration remains essential.
Berdmore's Loach is an enthusiast's choice that rewards attentive husbandry with years of engaging behaviour, including its characteristic loach 'clicking' sounds and playful interactions within the group.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 24–28°C, moderate to strong flow, high dissolved oxygen. Tank: 250 L minimum; coarse sand, smooth pebbles, large driftwood hides; robust plant choices only. Feeding: Sinking omnivore pellets, frozen bloodworm, shrimp, tubifex, and blanched spinach. Breeding: Not documented in captivity; likely requires seasonal triggers. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; best with other large, robust loaches or cichlids of similar temperament.
