About

Betta imbellis is a wild betta species native to blackwater and clearwater habitats in Malaysia, southern Thailand, and Sumatra, where it inhabits slow-moving, heavily vegetated streams, ditches, rice paddies, and peat swamp margins. It is closely related to Betta splendens but is significantly less aggressive, earning its common name 'Peaceful Betta' — males of this species can sometimes even be kept together in well-planned, heavily planted tanks, which is impossible with Betta splendens.

The coloration is subtler than domesticated bettas but beautiful in its own right: the body is dark olive-brown to black, with iridescent blue-green scale edges that shimmer vividly under good lighting. The fins are edged with red and blue iridescence, creating a crescent pattern on the caudal fin that gives rise to another common name, the Crescent Betta. Females are less colorful but similarly attractive.

Betta imbellis is a mouthbrooder in the paternal mouthbrooding group — somewhat unusual for the Betta splendens complex, which is entirely bubble-nest building. In the aquarium it is peaceful, adaptable, and interesting to observe, particularly during male-male interactions that involve fin displays and posturing rather than immediate combat. In parts of its native range, Betta imbellis populations are under pressure from habitat loss due to agricultural expansion, drainage of peat swamps, and urbanization. The hobby's captive population represents a genuine conservation reservoir for the species, and maintaining pure, healthy captive stocks is a meaningful contribution by hobbyists who dedicate space and care to this underrated wild betta.

Care Guide

Tank Setup A 20-liter or larger tank per individual or pair. For small harems or multi-male setups, a heavily planted 80+ liter tank with abundant visual barriers is required. Use dense plant cover — floating plants, Java Moss, and Cryptocorynes. Dim lighting. Gentle filtration only. Indian almond leaves and botanicals enhance the natural blackwater feel and reduce stress.

Water Parameters pH 5.5–7.5, temperature 22–28°C. Soft water preferred — in the wild it inhabits very soft, slightly acidic to neutral water. Regular 20–25% weekly water changes. Tannin-stained water with Indian almond leaves is ideal.

Feeding Carnivorous. Accept small pellets, frozen daphnia, baby brine shrimp, small bloodworms, and micro worms. Feed small amounts twice daily. Live food encourages natural hunting behavior and maintains condition.

Male Cohabitation Male imbellis can sometimes coexist in well-planted tanks, unlike B. splendens. However, this requires a large enough tank (80+ liters), abundant visual barriers, and careful monitoring. Some individual males are more aggressive than others. Remove any male showing persistent aggression immediately.

Compatibility with Other Species Can be kept with small, non-aggressive species: Boraras, small rasboras, small corydoras, and peaceful nano fish. Avoid fin-nipping species.

Breeding The male mouthbroods the eggs and early fry. Condition both sexes well before breeding. Provide a species-only breeding tank. The male typically holds for 10–14 days.

Health Notes Generally hardy. Sensitive to poor water quality. Avoid large temperature fluctuations. Keep labyrinth organ area warm and humid.

Long-term Notes Betta imbellis in appropriate blackwater or slightly acidic conditions with good water quality can live 4 years or more. Their relatively peaceful nature compared to B. splendens makes them more suitable for long-term community situations, and established pairs in well-planted tanks show increasingly natural courtship and territorial behavior that is fascinating to observe over the long term. If keeping a small mixed group of Betta imbellis, ensure the tank is densely planted enough that any individual can find complete visual isolation from others — this significantly reduces chronic stress in this species.
