Betta imbellis Wild

Betta imbellis, commonly called the peaceful betta or crescent betta, is a bubblenest-building wild betta native to shallow, vegetated waters of southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, and Singapore. Males display metallic blue-green scale edging, red fin margins, and a distinctive crescent mark on the caudal fin, making them one of the most elegant wild Betta species available to hobbyists.

Unlike their domesticated relatives, B. imbellis are notably less aggressive and can sometimes be kept in pairs or in species tanks with dense planting. They inhabit slow-moving blackwater ditches, rice paddies, and forest streams where tannin-stained, soft acidic water is the norm. Replicating these conditions with leaf litter and driftwood is strongly recommended.

Feeding is straightforward — they accept small live and frozen foods enthusiastically and can be trained onto quality micro pellets. Breeding is rewarding: males build bubble nests under floating leaves and provide parental care. This species is an ideal gateway into wild Betta keeping.

Water: 23–28°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft to very soft (GH 1–8) — tannins from Indian almond leaves greatly benefit health. Tank: minimum 40 L, heavily planted with floating cover, dim lighting, and tight-fitting lid to prevent escape. Feeding: live or frozen daphnia, bloodworm, and brine shrimp; accepts micro pellets when conditioned. Breeding: male builds bubble nest under leaf; remove female after spawning; male guards eggs for 2–3 days. Compatibility: can be kept with small peaceful nano fish; avoid fin-nippers and other Betta males.
