About

Betta macrostoma is frequently cited as the most beautiful species in the entire Betta genus, and it is difficult to argue otherwise. Males are breathtaking: a rich orange-red body with dark brown to black horizontal banding along the flanks, a striking black-spotted cream to orange dorsal fin, and an imposing large mouth that justifies its scientific name (macrostoma = large mouth). Females are attractively marked in their own right with similar but more muted banding.

Endemic to the highland peat swamp forests of Brunei and the Sarawak and Sabah regions of Borneo, Betta macrostoma is rare in the wild and fully protected under Brunei law. The captive population in the hobby is entirely from bred specimens — wild collection is illegal. It is one of the most sought-after and treasured wild betta species among collectors.

As a paternal mouthbrooder, the male holds eggs and fry in his buccal cavity for approximately 3–4 weeks. It is a semi-aggressive species — male pairs should be provided ample space and visual barriers, and breeding attempts require careful management. The species demands specific water conditions: soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, with good quality and stability being paramount to long-term health. The species name macrostoma translates directly from Greek as 'large mouth' — an accurate description of the distinctly wide, upward-tilted oral opening that gives the male a bold, imposing facial expression unlike any other member of the Sphaerichthys genus.

Care Guide

Tank Setup A minimum 100-liter species-specific tank for a pair or small group. Dense planting with tall plants, floating plants, driftwood, and leaf litter is essential to break sight lines and reduce territorial conflict. Use fine dark substrate. Gentle filtration with minimal flow. Dim lighting. A tight lid is mandatory — this species can jump.

Water Parameters pH 5.5–7.5, temperature 22–28°C. Soft, slightly acidic to neutral water preferred. Avoid hard or alkaline water. Regular 20–25% weekly water changes using soft, dechlorinated water. Indian almond leaves help maintain water chemistry and reduce stress.

Feeding Carnivorous. Offer larger live and frozen foods: adult brine shrimp, bloodworms, earthworms, small insects, and high-quality carnivore pellets. Feed twice daily. A varied, protein-rich diet is important for the health and coloration of this species.

Pair Management Semi-aggressive. Keep one male per tank in smaller setups. In large tanks with abundant cover, one male and one or two females can be housed together. Monitor interactions carefully. Males may harass females outside of breeding periods — provide female refugia within the tank.

Mouthbrooding The male holds the brood for 3–4 weeks, during which he typically does not eat. Do not feed heavily during brooding. Allow the male to release fry naturally in a safe environment. Fry are large enough to accept baby brine shrimp immediately.

Legal Status Always source from reputable captive breeders — wild collection is illegal. Support captive breeding programs to protect wild populations.

Health Notes Sensitive to poor water quality and stress. Quarantine thoroughly. Maintain pristine, stable conditions. Avoid copper-based medications.

Long-term Notes Betta macrostoma is a long-lived wild betta species, with records of individuals surviving 6 years or more in optimal conditions. Their relative scarcity in the hobby means each individual is valuable — invest in proper setup and care from the beginning. As pairs mature together and are conditioned with high-quality live foods, spawning success rates improve significantly.
