Betta smaragdina
Origin: Laos, Thailand (captive-bred copper color form)
The Copper Betta smaragdina is a captive-developed color form of the Emerald Betta, where the typical teal-green iridescence is selectively shifted toward warm copper-gold tones. Betta smaragdina originates from Laos and northeast Thailand, inhabiting rice paddies and shallow floodplains. Males are territorial but generally less aggressive than B. splendens, and the copper form retains the same hardier constitution of the wild species.
Maintain soft to moderately hard water with good cover. Best kept individually or as a single male with one or two females in a well-planted tank. Feed live and frozen meaty foods. Provide a tight-fitting lid as bettas are excellent jumpers. Monitor for aggression with other males. Moderate difficulty for a wild betta.
