Betta smaragdina
Origin: Thailand, Mahachai coastal region (captive-bred locality line)
The Mahachai Betta smaragdina is named after the coastal Mahachai region of Thailand, known for its distinctive brackish habitat. This population displays exceptionally vibrant emerald-green iridescent scaling and is one of the hardiest and most salt-tolerant wild betta species, adapting well to slightly brackish conditions. It is a fascinating and rewarding species for experienced betta and wild fish enthusiasts.
Tolerates a wider pH and hardness range than most bettas, including slightly brackish conditions (1–3 ppt salt). Provide dense planting, floating cover, and dim lighting. Feed live and frozen invertebrates. Keep individually or in carefully managed groups. Tight-fitting lid essential. One of the more robust wild betta species.
