Wild-type Betta splendens more closely resembles the natural form of the species from Thailand, with shorter fins and less exaggerated colouration compared to show varieties. This form is hardier, more active, and better able to navigate in planted tanks. The natural form shows iridescent blue-green and red in males when flaring. An interesting alternative to the show variety for betta enthusiasts wanting a more natural presentation.
