Polypterus senegalus
Origin: Tropical Africa (widespread across the Sahel and sub-Saharan river systems)
The Senegal Bichir is the most widely kept member of the polypterid family and the ideal introduction to bichir keeping. Its plain gray coloration belies a fascinating prehistoric nature — bichirs are living relics of an ancient lineage unchanged for over 400 million years. They can breathe atmospheric air using a modified swim bladder functioning as a lung, allowing them to survive in oxygen-depleted water. Hardy and adaptable, they thrive on a varied carnivorous diet.
Provide a large tank with a tight-fitting lid — bichirs are escape artists. Feed meaty foods: earthworms, frozen bloodworms, prawns, krill. Keep with fish too large to be eaten. Substrate of fine sand preferred. Ensure the water surface is accessible for air breathing. Hardy and tolerant of a wide range of conditions.
