Atherina boyeri
Also known as: Big-scale Sand Smelt, Boyer's Sand Smelt
Origin: Europe & Mediterranean (brackish/freshwater)
Atherina boyeri is widespread across the coastal and inland waters of Europe and the Mediterranean basin, tolerating a broad range of salinities from fully fresh to marine. Its streamlined, silvery body and active schooling behaviour make it an interesting and unusual aquarium subject. A robust, undemanding species that benefits from space to swim fast in large groups.
Water: 15–25°C, pH 7.0–8.5, brackish tolerant; moderate to hard water. Tank: 80 L+, open swimming space; tolerates mild salinity addition. Feeding: Omnivore; flakes, small pellets, and frozen/live invertebrates. Behaviour: Fast-moving, active schooling fish; skittish in sparse groups. Compatibility: Suitable for brackish or hard freshwater community tanks.
