Astyanax bimaculatus
Also known as: Two-spot Astyanax, Bimaculated Tetra
Origin: South America (widespread, Venezuela to Argentina)
Astyanax bimaculatus, the Two-spot Astyanax, is among the most widely distributed South American characins, ranging from Venezuela to Argentina. Its silver body bears two clearly defined dark spots — one at the shoulder and one at the caudal peduncle — creating a clean, symmetrical pattern. A robust and highly adaptable species, it tolerates a wide range of water conditions including harder, more alkaline water that many tetras cannot handle. Best kept in spacious aquariums of 150 L or more where it can form impressive schools. It makes an excellent, active companion for medium South American cichlids and other large community fish.
Water: pH 6.0–8.0, temperature 20–28 °C; very adaptable. One of the hardiest tetras available. Tank: 150 L minimum; requires space for active schooling. Robust plants and open swimming lanes. Feeding: Omnivore; accepts all standard foods; include plant-based foods for balanced diet. Breeding: Prolific egg-scatterer; spawns readily in neutral water. Guard eggs from adults. Compatibility: Peaceful; suitable for large community tanks. May intimidate very small fish.
