Tetraodon biocellatus
Also known as: Java Figure-Eight Puffer, Javanese Figure-8 Puffer, Island Figure-Eight
Origin: Java, Indonesia (coastal rivers and estuaries)
The Javanese form of Tetraodon biocellatus exhibits a particularly well-defined, rounded figure-8 pattern on the dorsal surface and shows marginally higher tolerance for freshwater-to-brackish transitions compared to mainland Southeast Asian populations. It is one of the most personable puffers in the trade, quickly learning to associate its keeper with feeding time and exhibiting expressive behaviour when hungry. Java populations are collected from coastal river systems where salinity fluctuates seasonally, which may explain the broader tolerance. While it can be maintained briefly in low-end freshwater, long-term health demands at least light brackish conditions. It remains one of the better starter puffers for keepers moving beyond the smallest species.
Water: Light brackish SG 1.003–1.007 ideal; pH 7.0–8.0; temperature 24–28°C; clean; stable salinity. Tank: 80 L minimum per pair; sandy or mixed substrate; rock and mangrove root décor; good flow. Feeding: Snails essential; mussels, clams, krill, frozen bloodworm; hard food weekly for beak health. Breeding: Rare in captivity; pair separate in brackish breeding tank; substrate spawner. Compatibility: Better than many puffers but still semi-aggressive; keep with larger robust brackish species with care.
