Biotoecus opercularis
Also known as: Biotoecus Dwarf Cichlid, Opercularis Cichlid
Origin: South America (Venezuela, Brazil)
Biotoecus opercularis is one of the most unusual and rarely kept dwarf cichlids, found in extreme blackwater habitats in Venezuela and western Brazil. Its cryptic colouration of olive-brown with subtle iridescence serves as camouflage over leaf litter. It spends much of its time sifting fine substrate for tiny invertebrates, making a sandy, well-decorated blackwater setup essential for its wellbeing.
Water: 25-29°C, pH 4.5-6.0, GH 0-3, KH 0-1; near-pure blackwater conditions mandatory. Tank: 60L minimum; fine white sand, leaf litter, and dense tannin staining essential. Feeding: Omnivore; live artemia nauplii and micro-worms; very reluctant to eat dry food. Behaviour: Secretive and peaceful; spawns on fine sandy substrate. Compatibility: Species tank essential; only suitable for extreme blackwater biotopes.
