Osteoglossum ferreirai
Also known as: Black Arowana, Black Arawana
Origin: South America
Osteoglossum ferreirai inhabits the dark, acidic blackwater rivers of the Rio Negro basin in Brazil and Colombia. Juveniles are unmistakable with their vivid striped pattern, which fades through adolescence into a deep metallic blue-green adult colouration. It requires extremely soft, acidic water and is more demanding than the Silver Arowana.
Water: 24-30°C, pH 4.5-6.5, very soft and highly acidic; blackwater conditions essential. Tank: Minimum 600L, extremely long, tight and weighted lid, gentle filtration, dark substrate. Feeding: Carnivore; insects, prawns, fish strips, earthworms; surface or floating foods preferred. Behaviour: Aggressive surface predator; will consume fish and invertebrates near the surface. Compatibility: Large catfish, large characins, or other deep-bodied robust Amazonian species.
