Leporinus affinis
Also known as: Black-banded Leporinus
Origin: South America (Amazon and Orinoco basins)
Leporinus affinis, the Black-banded Leporinus, is found across the Amazon and Orinoco basins and features up to ten vertical dark bars on a pale yellow body. It is a powerful swimmer that appreciates a strong current and ample swimming space. Like other leporinus species, it can be fin-nippy and will consume soft aquatic plants, so tank design must accommodate its robust nature.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 5.5–7.5, moderate hardness tolerated. Tank: 200 L minimum; robust decor with rocks and driftwood; avoid soft-leaved plants. Feeding: Pellets, vegetables, fruit slices, flake and meaty frozen foods; highly varied diet needed. Behaviour: Active and assertive; keep singly or in large groups; prone to chasing smaller fish. Compatibility: Large cichlids, big barbs, large catfish and similar robust species.
