About

Myleus schomburgkii is one of the most recognisable of the large pacu species, distinguished by the dramatic vertical black bar that runs down its silver flank. It is native to the Amazon basin's whitewater river systems where it feeds on fallen fruits and vegetation. Specimens can reach 35 cm or more and live for well over a decade, making it a long-term commitment for any aquarist.

This species demands a very large aquarium — 1000 litres or more — with powerful filtration and regular water changes to manage its substantial waste output. Like other Myleus it will consume most soft-leaved plants and should be provided with artificial décor or very tough species such as Anubias anchored to rock or wood. The bar patterning is most vivid in juveniles and may fade or become less defined as individuals mature.

Myleus schomburgkii is peaceful and benefits from the company of its own kind or other large, non-aggressive South American species. It is an active, strong swimmer that appreciates open water and will not thrive in cramped or overly decorated tanks. A high-quality herbivore diet with varied fresh vegetables is essential for long-term health.

Care Guide

Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 5.5–7.5, 24–28°C; high turnover filtration essential. Tank: 1000 L minimum with wide open swimming area; avoid soft-leaved plants. Feeding: Vegetable-based diet — cucumber, courgette, fruit, algae wafers, and herbivore pellets. Breeding: Extremely rarely achieved in home aquaria; would require massive conditioning and seasonal cues. Compatibility: Peaceful with similarly large fish; good with other pacu, large geophagines, and South American catfish.
