Chiloglanis niger
Also known as: Black Chiloglanis, Black Suckercat
Origin: Central Africa (torrent streams)
Chiloglanis niger is an intensely dark-pigmented, uniformly melanistic torrent catfish from Central African fast-flowing streams and rapids sections of large rivers. Like all Chiloglanis it possesses a powerful oral sucker that allows it to adhere to smooth rock surfaces even in very strong currents, and it is in constant motion across rock faces as it grazes.
In the aquarium it demands the same specialised conditions as other Chiloglanis: high flow, high dissolved oxygen, cool temperatures and smooth rocks for grazing. It is a social species that should be kept in groups; isolated individuals rarely thrive for long.
Fed primarily on algae, biofilm and prepared algae-based foods, it will also accept blanched vegetables and sinking algae wafers.
Water: 20–25°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 4–14, KH 2–8); oxygen saturation critical. Tank: 60 L minimum; very high circulation; smooth basalt or slate rocks; minimal fine sediment. Feeding: Algae wafers, blanched zucchini, spinach, spirulina tabs; continuous grazing supplemented with sinking foods. Breeding: Not documented in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful; keep in groups of 4+; incompatible with low-flow or warm community setups.
